Making A Dent In Student Loan Debt and Stress

The year is just flying by. There's so much to do after a long year of postponement. Before we know it, autumn will be here and, with it, the transition of millions of federal student loans from forbearance to repayment.

Through our own survey and from national news, we know that student loan debt is a concern for borrowers and their families. While many are hoping for an across-the-board loan forgiveness, as of this writing that's not on the horizon. So it's gratifying to see employers are recognizing the stress that student loan debt has on their workforce and finding ways to alleviate the pressure. Their efforts are helping their business and their workforce.

I came across this press release summarizing an important sentiment related to providing a student loan repayment program.

"We have significant long-term goals to achieve. To get there we have to have the best possible team and culture. Ensuring a work-life balance is critical for longevity of our teammates. Expanding our employee benefits is a step forward on that leadership path." - Chris Kemper, founder and CEO of Palmetto.

Reducing the burden caused by student loan debt is a growing concern for organizations who want to achieve their goals.

70% of employees with debt said that student loan benefits would improve their work performance.

Thankfully, student loan repayment assistance has been fueled by government law allowing for tax-free contributions through 2025. The increasing number of employers getting on board to offer this type of support has made it the fastest growing employee benefit.

86% of employees with student loans would commit to a company for five years if the employer helped pay back their student loans.

But overall, student loan repayment support isn't limited to student loan paydown. An effective program also includes counseling borrowers on how to reap the benefits of available options. 25% of the US labor force is in public service and may be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). A large variety of organizations are recognizing the importance of providing expert counseling to help their workforce or customers (including past students) achieve repayment success.

AIG Retirement Services surveyed public sector employees about repaying their federal student loans. A significant number said that if they didn’t have student loan payments they would contribute more to retirement savings and investments (47%) or add to emergency savings (43%).
